People with seborrheic dermatitis (SD) can live normal, healthy lives. Although currently there is no cure for the disease, it can be kept under control so that the embarrassing scaling is minimized.
How Can I Treat It?
Treatment for SD varies, depending on the affected areas and the severity of the condition. The most simple treatment involves the use of medicated and anti-dandruff shampoos to control the itching and scaling. Mild-to-severe cases can be treated with medicated prescription shampoos such as Capex® Shampoo (fluocinolone acetonide) topical shampoo, 0.01%, which is a topical steroid. Some side effects have been reported infrequently in people who have used topical steroids, such as inflammation, burning, itching and irritation.
For more stubborn cases, consult a dermatologist who can confirm the diagnosis. Search the DermFinder® to locate a dermatologist in your area.
Adults and Older Children
- Use Capex® Shampoo to reduce flaking and dryness.
- Shampoo hair vigorously. Massage into scalp, leave on for at least five minutes, and rinse thoroughly.
- Use Capex® Shampoo daily for two weeks, and then use once a week to control symptoms.
Infants (cradle cap)
- Gently rub mineral oil on the scalp to help loosen the scales.
- Wash the baby's head gently with a non-medicated baby shampoo. This can be done every day. Careful and gentle washing will not hurt the baby.
- Brush the baby's hair gently with a soft brush to eliminate the scales.
